Straight Answers to Common Septic Questions
Q: How often should I have my septic tank pumped?
For many households, septic tanks are typically pumped every 3 to 5 years, but there isn’t one schedule that’s right for every property. Tank size, household size, water use, and what goes into the system all make a difference. If you aren’t sure when yours was last pumped, give us a call.
Q: How do I know if my septic tank needs to be pumped?
Slow drains, gurgling plumbing, sewage odors, wet or unusually green areas around the septic system, or sewage backing up into the home can all indicate a problem. Ideally, though, you don’t want to wait for warning signs. Routine pumping can help prevent a much less pleasant surprise.
Q: Can you pump a septic tank in the winter?
Yes, septic tanks can often be pumped during New Hampshire and Maine winters. Access, snow depth, frozen ground, and the location of the tank can affect the job, so call us if you need winter service and we’ll talk through your situation.
Q: Do I need to know where my septic tank is?
It helps, but don’t panic if you aren’t sure. Let us know what you know about the property and system when you call.
Q: What is a septic riser?
A septic riser extends access to your septic tank closer to ground level. That means less digging when it’s time to pump, inspect, or maintain the tank. North Conway Disposal installs septic risers.
Q: What is a septic outlet filter?
An outlet filter helps prevent solids from leaving the septic tank and entering the drain field. Over time, the filter can collect material and needs to be cleaned. We provide outlet filter cleaning as part of our septic services.
Q: What is a septic tank baffle?
Baffles help control how wastewater enters and exits the septic tank and help keep solids where they belong. Damaged or deteriorated baffles can cause problems with the system. We provide septic baffle repairs when needed.
Q: Do you repair septic systems or just pump tanks?
We do more than pumping. North Conway Disposal provides septic pumping, baffle repairs, outlet filter cleaning, riser installation, and septic system repairs.
Q: Do you service both Maine and New Hampshire?
Yes. We serve communities throughout the Mount Washington Valley, Carroll County, and western Maine. Visit our Areas We Serve page or give us a call if you’re unsure whether we come to your location.
Q: What should I do if I think something is wrong with my septic system?
Call us. Tell us what you’re seeing, smelling, or hearing and we’ll help determine the next step. Septic problems don’t usually improve by ignoring them.

Septic Maintenance Tips
01
Regular Pumping
Ensure your system is pumped every 3 to 5 years to prevent solid accumulation and field failure.
02
Watch Your Water
Excess water usage can flood your system. Fix leaks and use high-efficiency appliances to reduce load.
03
Flush With Care
Only flush waste and toilet paper. Avoid grease, chemicals, and so-called 'flushable' wipes.
